How to Pick the Best Paint Color For Any Room - 10 Tips
- Play this simple game...
Close your eyes and picture "relaxation". What colour is this concept in your mind. This simple exercise illustrates that you can quickly determine what tones evoke what mood or feelings with you. Now you have learned this skill use it to complete the next exercise.
- Pick the room's function
Determine the purpose of the room you want to paint - this depends on your lifestyle and desires. For example, dark blues and purples may create a formal and dramatic dining room while reds and oranges a more funky and eclectic feel.
- Size of the room
Make a small room appear larger, paint it a lighter and cool hues. To make a large room feel more cozy, use warm, darker, more intense hues
- Consider the existing lighting
Obviously the amount of light and source of light will affect the tone of the walls and the atmosphere of a room. You can upload a picture of your room on to online colour visualizer, then you can virtually change your wall paint.
- Your ideal
Start to notice colours that you surround yourself with - which ones are you attracted to? What does that shade make you think about or feel? Magazines are a great way to start a portfolio - just tear out pictures with tones that you like and put them in a folder. Your home should reflect your own personality.
- Create harmony
Make a list of what colours already exist in your room, ones that will not be changing. What tone is the floor? Are there coloured architectural features in the room that will not be changed? Be sure to check that these unchangeable features will not clash with your wall paint.
- Paint in adjacent rooms
While you do not have to match every room, you want one room to flow naturally into the next. To do this select complementary tones or vary the intensity of one hue.
- Forecast undertones
The look of a paint can change dramatically, depending on what's next to it. Most paints have undertones because they are mixed from primary colours such as red, blue and yellow. Undertones can be difficult to spot so ask an expert to help you out.
- General rules
Cool tones are calming and warm tones energize.
- Always paint your wall green
Sustainable wall paint is the healthiest option for you and your family regardless of the tone you choose. Green paints also allow the substrate to 'breathe',are anti-static (avoiding dust), discourage mould growth, and improve air quality. As expected green paint has a more sustainably produced with much less damage to the environment.
